I was 38 years old when I was diagnosed with stage 3B bowel cancer. I started losing my hair, so I went to the doctor to check if everything was ok. I was extremely iron deficient, so the doctor suggested I start taking iron tablets. The doctor also suggested I increase my red meat intake, which I did to 3 times per week.

I thought that with two young kids, all my dignity had already been lost and nothing much could gross me out.

Yet it was one good, long episode of rectal bleeding that really made me face my squeamishness and uneasiness with discussing bodily functions.

The bleeding had stopped by the time I arrived at the hospital, when the doctors asked, “How much blood? A teaspoon? A tablespoon?”

I was 35, fit, healthy and constantly on the move.

A full-time working mum and wife with 3 children aged 9, 6 & 3 and a competitive powerlifter.
